CE Credit Hours: 1.00 Continuing Education Credit Hours
CEU Course Description
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) causes chronic inflammation of the airways and destruction of the lung parenchyma, which lead to structural changes and dynamic collapse in the small airways. The most common feature is air trapping and chest hyperinflation, causing the diaphragm muscle fibers to become more transversely oriented. Given the interdependent relationship between the respiratory and musculoskeletal systems, various manual techniques have been proposed for the treatment of COPD symptoms. The goal of this CEU course is to evaluate the effects of the Manual Diaphragm Release Technique on respiratory function of people with COPD by evaluating a single-center, randomized, controlled trial. We will also be taking a look at diaphragmatic mobility after one single session, as well as cumulatively. Outcomes tested use the 6-minute walk test, maximal respiratory pressure, and abdominal and chest wall excursion to measure exercise and inspiratory capacity in individuals with COPD.
