This course utilizes the textbook Integrative Manual Therapy for the Autonomic Nervous System and Related Disorders, by Sharon Giammatteo, Ph.D., P.T., and Thomas Giammateo, D.C., P.T. published by North Atlantic Books. The autonomic nervous system is considered the involuntary division of the peripheral nervous system, consisting of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. When these systems are out of balance, a barrage of symptoms and disorders develop.  The typical medical response is directed at the symptoms; not the problem.  The body’s ability to heal depends on creating balance in the tissues and this balance is regulated by the autonomic nervous system. This course presents the principles of Advanced Strain and Counterstrain Technique to help balance the autonomic nervous system in order to help alleviate symptoms, by creating homeostasis.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Understand how the divisions of the autonomic nervous system function and describe symptoms that may occur when this system is out of balance

  2. List and explain the current models of Stain and Counterstrain Technique

  3. Describe how this technique decreases the hypertonicity of protective muscle spasm and spasticity

  4. Explain how to perform Advanced Strain and Counterstrain technique

  5. Demonstrate understanding of specific techniques  for the body’s  systems
