CE Course Description

Medical errors remain a significant cause of patient harm across healthcare settings and can negatively impact patient outcomes, healthcare costs, and quality of care. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants play an important role in promoting patient safety through effective communication, clinical decision-making, documentation, and collaboration with the healthcare team. This course provides an overview of medical errors, including definitions, incidence, prevalence, contributing factors, and vulnerable populations at increased risk for adverse outcomes. Participants will examine root cause analysis, common medical errors encountered in rehabilitation practice, Florida statutes and policies related to medical error prevention, and evidence-based strategies to reduce risk and improve patient safety. Case studies and clinical examples are integrated throughout the course to support application of concepts to clinical practice.

CE Course Objectives

  1. Summarize the incidence, prevalence, definitions, and common causes of medical errors, adverse events, and sentinel events in healthcare.
  2. Recall the role of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in preventing medical errors, including relevant Florida statutes, policies, and patient safety principles.
