Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Medical errors, due in large part to systemic problems, are the third leading cause of death.  Ensuring appropriate, efficient, effective, and quality care is now a regulated branch of medical practice.  This CEU course explores the types of medical errors, the systematic approach of a root cause analysis, disclosure of an error to the patient, strategies to reduce the risk of medical errors, and the reporting of medical errors to the appropriate agencies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe the difference between an error of execution and an error of planning.
  2. Identify the steps of a root cause analysis.
  3. Explain what the patient’s bill of rights asserts about disclosure of an error.
