CEU Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive review of rotator cuff dysfunction and associated shoulder pathologies frequently encountered in physical therapy practice. Participants will examine the etiology, prevalence, and predisposing factors contributing to rotator cuff disorders, including the roles of repetitive loading, age-related degenerative changes, and traumatic injury. This course includes a review of relevant shoulder anatomy, function, and arthrokinematics, with emphasis on the stabilizing and movement-producing roles of the rotator cuff. Common symptom presentations and differential diagnostic considerations will be reviewed, including adhesive capsulitis, supraspinatus tendinosis, long head of the biceps pathology, subacromial impingement, and superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesions, along with an overview of appropriate orthopedic special testing used to evaluate these conditions. Evidence-based therapeutic exercise strategies and rehabilitation considerations will also be addressed, including key principles guiding rehabilitation following rotator cuff repair. Case-based examples will be integrated throughout the course to support clinical reasoning and application of assessment and treatment principles.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Review the etiology, prevalence, and predisposing factors associated with rotator cuff dysfunction, including the roles of repetitive use, degenerative changes related to aging, and traumatic injury
  2. Recognize common symptoms and clinical presentations associated with rotator cuff pathology and related shoulder conditions such as adhesive capsulitis, supraspinatus tendinosis, long head of the biceps involvement, impingement, and SLAP lesions
  3. Recall relevant shoulder anatomy, functional biomechanics, arthrokinematics, and the stabilizing role of the rotator cuff in normal glenohumeral movement
  4. Summarize evidence-based therapeutic exercise principles and rehabilitation considerations for individuals with rotator cuff dysfunction, including key considerations following rotator cuff repair
