CEU Course Description

This course introduces physical therapists and physical therapist assistants to the rapidly expanding role of telehealth in rehabilitation practice, a growth accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and now firmly integrated into contemporary care delivery. Participants will examine how telehealth compares with in-person visits, including its demonstrated effectiveness, convenience, and accessibility, as well as the concerns that arise when physical contact and equipment are limited. The course explains how virtual physical therapy operates in real time, outlines federal and state requirements, addresses HIPAA and malpractice considerations, and clarifies the technological needs that support safe and efficient sessions. Learners will explore diagnoses that respond well to telehealth interventions, strategies for training staff and easing reluctance toward technology use, and methods for managing challenges such as unstable connections or limited access to exercise equipment. Documentation, coding, and billing requirements will be reviewed to highlight how reimbursement for telehealth aligns with or differs from in-person care, and guidance will be provided on making appropriate referrals when an in-person visit is clinically necessary.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Identify the fundamental components of telehealth in physical therapy, including its rise since 2020, its comparison with in-person care, its demonstrated effectiveness, and the regulatory and technological requirements that ensure safe and compliant delivery
  2. Recall the clinical and operational elements that support effective telehealth practice, including appropriate patient selection, common diagnoses that benefit from virtual intervention, and strategies for managing technological limitations or limited access to equipment
  3. Recognize the administrative and clinical integration needs of telehealth by understanding documentation, coding, and billing expectations, reimbursement considerations, staff training needs, and indicators that warrant referral for in-person evaluation or treatment
