CEU Course Description

This course provides an in-depth review of turf toe with specific emphasis on physical therapy intervention. Participants will examine the definition, biomechanical mechanism, and characteristic symptoms associated with injury to the plantar capsular and ligamentous complex of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Current evidence related to prevalence, epidemiology, and common mechanisms of injury will be discussed, particularly in athletic populations participating in cutting and push-off activities. Clinically relevant anatomy of the first metatarsophalangeal joint will be reviewed to support accurate assessment and clinical reasoning. This course will outline injury grading based on tissue involvement and clinical presentation and will emphasize differential diagnosis to distinguish turf toe from other common great toe conditions. Evidence-informed physical therapy examination strategies will be presented, followed by, grade-specific rehabilitation protocols designed to restore mobility, strength, dynamic stability, and safe return to sport or activity.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Review the biomechanical mechanisms and anatomy involved in turf toe.
  2. Recognize injury to the plantar ligament complex of the first metatarsophalangeal joint associated with turf toe.
