CEU Course Description
The major objectives of rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are the early regain of range of motion (ROM) and mobilization of the patient. There are five main sections to this CUE course. The first goal is to investigate the effect of the knee position during wound closure on early knee function recovery after TKA. Here we will look into 80 subjects who received primary TKAs secondary to osteoarthritis and compare wound closure at full knee extension with 90 degrees of knee flexion, who then were evaluated at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months post-operatively. The second section compares the effects of continuous passive motion compared to sling exercise training on functional outcomes in a randomized-controlled clinical trial of 125 subjects who underwent primary TKA. They were assessed one day before discharge and three months later for passive knee flexion range of motion primarily, as well as active range of motion, postural control, physical activity and pain. The third section reviews various physical therapy treatments used both before and after TKA and the outcomes. It compares continuous passive motion, cryotherapy, magnetotherapy, electrical stimulation and other treatment options. The fourth section describes the necessity of hip abductor strengthening following TKA and the effects on hip function and pain. The fifth and final section revolves around a retrospective cohort study describing circuit training over 24 weeks beginning three months after TKA and the effects seen in motion analysis, strength, range of motion, and patient reported function. The reading materials for this course include articles from the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, the International Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Journal of Novel Physiotherapies.
