CEU Course Description

Heart failure (HF) is an emerging epidemic that affects both sexes and all races, and has been increasing over the past few decades secondary to the aging population.  Understanding the pathophysiology of HF allows one to achieve the goals of treatment, which are to relieve symptoms, decrease hospital admissions, prolong patient life, as well as improve the patient’s overall quality of life.  When discussing treatment options for the heart, thermotherapy includes all therapeutic treatments based on the transfer of thermal energy into or out of the human body. There are a wide array of thermotherapeutic modalities available through the different modes of temperature transfer, such as hot packs through conduction, radiant heat via conversion, and a Finnish sauna with convection. The goals of this CEU course are to review the rationale for the use of heat and/or cold as a treatment modality for HF and explore how advancements in bioheat transfer modeling coupled with improvements in delivery techniques will have an impact in the design and analysis of a thermotherapy system.

* Please note that the sentence at the very bottom of page 5 of the pdf, “Infrared energy as part of the EM spectrum has a shorter wave length than ultraviolet and visible light.” is incorrect. Infrared has conversely be shown to have a longer wave length compared to both ultraviolet and visible lights. We have contacted the authors and requested a correction.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Explain the major objective of thermotherapy.
  2. Compare and contrast the physiological effects of heat and cold.
  3. Examine the association between tissue temperature and tissue metabolism.
  4. Identify when thermotherapy could be dangerous.
  5. Describe the bioheat transfer model that represents thermal changes in a human body close to reality.
