Course Description

CEU Course Description

Compelling experimental evidence associates smoking to the degeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD).  The goal of this CEU course is to investigate the effects of impaired solute supply and nicotine-mediated down-regulation of cell proliferation and biosynthetic activity on the health of the disc.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Discuss nicotine-mediated down-regulation of disc cell anabolism.
  2. Explain how smoking leads to IVD malnutrition.
  3. Investigate in which regions there is a reduction of cell density due to tobacco-smoking.
  4. Describe a viable strategy for improving the homeostasis of a tobacco smoke degenerated IVD.
