Massage has been practiced for centuries to promote and restore health. Manual therapies; such as massage, have been shown to reduce perceived psychological stress, which could be of benefit to those experiencing the stress of cancer treatment. Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) represents approximately one-third of leukemia diagnoses. This course reviews a study that evaluates the effect of a massage protocol on levels of stress and health-related quality of life for patients AML.

  • Describe an Acute Myelogenous Leukemia diagnosis, its symptoms, and the role stress plays in the disease
  • Explain the study methods; including the two study groups and the specific massage protocol
  • List and describe the outcome measures used in the study
  • Describe the study results, specifically the effect of massage on study participants
