Course Description

CEU Course Description

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease and is associated with reduced physical capacity and quality of life.  The goal of this CEU course is to investigate if a short-term endurance or combined endurance / resistance exercise program is sufficient to improve aerobic capacity and maximum force in adult patients with MS.  Also explored is the impact of high intensity interval or continuous cardiovascular exercise, both in combination with resistance training, on muscle contractile characteristics, in terms of muscle fiber CSA / proportion, muscle strength and muscle mass, and on endurance capacity in MS. This course is based on articles by the International Journal of Molecular Sciences and PLOS ONE.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Enumerate the motivation-independent parameters that show a significant improvement of aerobic capacity.
  2. Explain the main cause of physical limitations of patients with MS.
  3. Examine the amount of time of endurance training that is sufficient to improve aerobic capacity in patients with MS.
  4. Describe the effectiveness of exercise intensity.
