CEU Course Description

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common lifelong disability affecting motor development in children. One goal of this CEU course is to investigate spastic hemiparesis recovery after intensive technology- enhanced physical rehabilitation with robot assistance in a case study with an 18-year-old girl. We will also review the effects of hand-arm bimanual intensive training in a randomized controlled trial of 30 children and its uses with hemiplegic cerebral palsy in the manipulation of object shape, size, and weight. In addition, one section of this course will describe the effects of modified Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) for functional activities in a study with children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy. It will also look at the outcomes of gross manual dexterity in this randomized control trial with 10 adolescent subjects. The course will finally delve into a 45 subject experimental trial consisting of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and the effects it has on spastic cerebral palsy specific to hand function. The reading materials for this course include articles from the International Journal of Neurorehabilitation, Journal of Novel Physiotherapies, and the Journal of Neurological Disorders.

CEU Course Objectives
  1. Investigate what the Bobath technique aims to do.
  2. Examine the principle that Constraint Induce Movement Therapy is based on.
  3. Identify for which type of CP high frequency rTMS is beneficial.
  4. Describe the effects that Bobath therapy has on muscle contracture and tone.
