Course Description

CEU Course Description

Chronic low back pain is a potentially disabling comorbidity of the obesity epidemic and a leading cause of disability.  First, we will discuss the exercise prescription techniques regarding patients with low back pain, and examples of core strengthening exercises applicable.  Next, this course will delve into a twelve-week program of lumbar stabilization exercises and the effects that may be seen on the cross-sectional area of the multifidi muscles, the peak torque of the trunk muscles, and the level of pain seen in women with chronic low back pain. Finally, we will explore a core strengthening exercise program on cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and strength in patients with mechanical low back pain.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Discuss what has been shown to increase lumbar muscle strength and is therefore an effective treatment for chronic low back pain.
  2. Explain which muscles are found to be atrophied in patients with low back pain.
  3. Identify what the American Council on Exercise recognizes as a first line intervention for those with chronic low back pain.
  4. Describe the intervention for which significant improvement on self reported measures of pain, disability, and function were documented.
