CEU Course Description

Pain related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is a common problem in modern societies. The goal of this CEU course is to present the concepts of TMD pain clinical management. We will first look closer into conservative treatments such as therapeutic exercise, occlusal splint therapy, massage and manual therapy. Then we will view different pharmacotherapy, minimally invasive and invasive techniques, and acupuncture to address TMD, as well as different surgical procedures used for treatment. In addition, this course compares self-reported pain intensity, sleeping difficulty, and treatment outcomes of patients with myofascial TMDs among different age groups. This final component revolves around a prospective outcome study of 179 subjects with TMD who were classified into different myofascial pain subgroups and gave information about pain and sleep as well as the different treatment interventions they had undergone in association with TMD and the effects that each had in his/her care as a whole. The reading materials for this course include articles from the Journal of Headache and Pain and BioMed Central Musculoskeletal Disorders.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Investigate what active and relaxation exercises have been shown to improve.
  2. Compare and contrast mobilization technique and muscle energy technique.
  3. Elucidate the most important stage of a treatment protocol.
